After my last blog on the beautiful and colourful bougainvillea I set a goal to hunt for double bract blooms and unbelievably my goal was achieved sooner and in shorter distance than I had expected!
Our hotel is situated in the historical area of Kota Kinabalu and right next to the town field (Padang Merdeka/Independence Field) where the declaration of independence of the state of Sabah and the formation of Malaysia took place in 1963. The spectator stand in Padang Merdeka had been going through a year-long facelift and was eventually unveiled 2 weeks ago and ready to be the venue for the state governor’s birthday parade on 4 October 2014 (Sabah is one of the 4 out of 13 states in Malaysia that does not have a Sultan).
The city council beautified the stand with plants and colourful bougainvillea and that was when I decided to put on my flip-flops and tread over there during my lunch break on the eve of the event in a slight drizzle to take a closer look at the flowers. I almost screamed with joy when I spotted the double bract bougainvillea and I knew my hunt was over!!!
The hunt is over… and now I’m moving on to hibiscus!
