toilet roll crafts – revisioning the humble toilet rolls

I like to upcycle toilet paper holders/toilet rolls because they are versatile, easily accessible and with some creative juices added, they present one of the best examples of upcycling.

If you follow my blog then you know I moved to a different city to start a new job early this year. When I was getting ready to move, I had to prioritise on what to bring and naturally, my wardrobe was on top of the list. With the little space left in my suitcases, I only managed to pack in a small pair of scissors, a couple pairs of pliers, some embroidery needles and threads.

After I settled in but before I could start playing with junks, I had to get the essentials and in the shortest time possible, I bought a new glue gun and dozens of glue sticks. Without all of my upcycling materials with me, the first thing I turned to of course, were the toilet rolls. I guess working in a hotel certainly has its advantage when it comes to getting my hands on the said materials.

beautifying job
I have smaller living quarters now but nothing is going to stop me from making the small space homely. Apart from resorting to artificial flowers, I got some plants and I needed a nice looking vase for my snake plant…

I used the toilet roll to cover up the stubborn glue on the glass jar, added some jute string and a flower made of a scrap of butcher string

Birthday greeting card (1)
I was asked to make a birthday card very last minute and this time, I broke the rules. I used some fresh material for the card as I did not have any of my beautiful card and paper off-cuts with me.

Birthday greeting card (2)
I made this card for a close friend. I created space for me and another very good friend of ours to write our birthday wishes for the birthday girl.

Once you know how to make a paper rosette, the materials you can use to make one is almost endless. Here, the red ones and gold leaves are from the red packet, the green ones from the chewing gum wrapper and silver leaves the gum package. The card is made of toilet roll.

Gift boxes for small gifts are also good to have.

this was the first time I made the flowers using a plastic bag. Added a string of Christmas ornamental beads to give that Christmassy feel…

how about using coasters to make the flowers?

the result was far better than I had expected as the wavy edge of the coaster enhanced the overall look of the flowers. These is my favourite among them all!

love came down at Christmas…

I once asked, to those who are not into upcycling, looking at these crafts, do they think it is frugality bothering on being cheapskate or do they marvel at the creativity of turning junks into priceless pieces of upcycled art? I will leave it up to you.

Last but not least, I wish all a blessed Christmas!

Blessings,
Evon xxx
